Direct answer

What does this calculator estimate?

Enter an amount and rate, choose Add or Remove, and get the net amount, tax or VAT amount, and gross total instantly using your editable rate.

  • Add-tax mode treats the entered amount as net before tax.
  • Remove-tax mode treats the entered amount as gross including tax; subtracting 8.25% directly is not the same as dividing by 1.0825.
  • The rate is editable and must be verified for the applicable jurisdiction, product or service, and transaction.

What is the difference between adding and removing tax?

Adding tax starts with a net amount and calculates the tax on that base. Removing tax starts with a tax-inclusive gross amount, so the calculator divides by one plus the rate instead of subtracting the same percentage from the gross amount.

Why does removing 8.25% not mean multiplying by 91.75%?

When tax is included in the gross amount, the gross equals net multiplied by 1.0825. Reversing that operation requires division by 1.0825; simply subtracting 8.25% uses the gross rather than the smaller net as the percentage base.

What should you verify before using the result?

  • The jurisdiction and rate that apply to the transaction
  • Whether the product or service is taxable, exempt, or subject to a special rate
  • Whether the entered amount is before tax or already tax-inclusive
  • Any rounding, invoicing, filing, or marketplace rules that affect the final transaction

How this calculator works

Reviewed July 2026 · BoringToolsKit Editorial Team

Formula

Add-tax mode: tax = amount × (tax rate ÷ 100), and gross amount = amount + tax. Remove-tax mode: net amount = gross amount ÷ (1 + tax rate ÷ 100), and included tax = gross amount − net amount.

Worked example

With the default $100 amount and 8.25% rate in add-tax mode, tax is $8.25 and the gross amount is $108.25. Switching to remove-tax mode treats the entered amount as gross and divides it by 1.0825 to find the net amount.

Assumptions to verify

  • The entered rate is the full tax rate that applies to the transaction.
  • Add-tax mode treats the amount as net before tax; remove-tax mode treats it as gross including tax.
  • The calculator does not determine jurisdiction, exemptions, product taxability, filing treatment, or which rate legally applies.

Frequently asked questions

How do I add sales tax to a price?

Multiply the price by the editable rate divided by 100 to find the tax, then add that tax to the original price to get the gross total.

How do I remove VAT from a price?

Divide the VAT-inclusive price by 1 plus the editable rate divided by 100. The result is the net price; subtract it from the gross price to find VAT.

What does a reverse sales tax calculator do?

It converts a tax-inclusive gross amount into the pre-tax net amount and included tax using your editable rate, rather than simply subtracting the rate from the total.
