Etsy charges a $0.20 listing fee, a 6.5 percent transaction fee on the item and shipping, a payment processing fee (about 3% + $0.25), and optional offsite ads fees (12 or 15 percent on qualifying orders). A $30 item with $4 shipping nets through several layers before profit.
A worked example
$30 item, $4 shipping: transaction fee 6.5% on $34 = $2.21, processing ~3% + $0.25 = $1.27, listing $0.20 — total fees about $3.68, leaving $30.32 before product cost. At $8 product cost, profit is $22.32. The calculator shows every layer.
Offsite ads change the math
When an order comes through Etsy's offsite ads program, the fee is 15 percent of the order (12% for sellers over $10k). That $34 order costs $5.10 instead of $3.68 — the difference can flip a thin-margin item. The calculator models both on-site and offsite-ad orders.
Renewal and marketing costs
Listings last four months or until sold; renewals add $0.20. Etsy Ads (on-site) and promoted listings add cost per click. A seller spending $50 monthly on Etsy Ads must spread that across orders — the calculator's marketing input makes the true per-order cost visible.
Pricing to net a target profit
Working backward: to net $20 profit on an $8-cost item, the item price must cover fees at 6.5% + 3% + $0.25 + $0.20 plus shipping. The calculator's reverse view returns the price that achieves the target.
