Tip before or after tax?
Tipping convention is to calculate on the pre-tax subtotal, not the amount including sales tax. This calculator defaults to the pre-tax basis and lets you include tax if you prefer. The practical difference is small — on a $100 bill with 8% tax, tipping 20% on the subtotal is $20, versus $21.60 on the taxed total.
How to tip when splitting a bill
For an even split, add the tip to the total and divide by the number of people. If one person ordered significantly more, you can each tip on your own portion. How this calculator works
Formula
Tip base = subtotal, or subtotal + tax when that option is selected. Tip = tip base × tip rate ÷ 100. Unrounded total = subtotal + tax + tip. Equal share = total ÷ people. Optional rounding raises each share to the selected increment and reports the extra collected.
Worked example
For a $100 subtotal, $8 tax, 20% tip on the subtotal, and four people, the tip is $20, the bill total is $128, and each person pays $32.

Why do stacked rounded shares exceed the bill?
Rounding each person’s share upward creates a visible rounding adjustment, so the collected total can exceed the exact total.
Does the calculator send my bill anywhere?
No. It performs deterministic arithmetic in your browser and does not contact a restaurant or payment service.
How much should I tip at a restaurant?
In the U.S., 15–20% of the pre-tax bill is the standard range, with 20% a common default for good service. For large groups, some restaurants add an automatic gratuity (often 18%) — check the receipt, since you generally shouldn't tip on top of an added service charge.
Should I tip before or after tax?
