What does this calculator estimate?

Simplify by dividing numerator and denominator by their greatest common divisor. 42/50: GCD is 2, so the answer is 21/25 (0.84 as a decimal). Improper fractions convert to mixed numbers: 7/4 = 1 3/4.

How does the Euclidean algorithm find the GCD?

Divide the larger number by the smaller and keep the remainder. Replace the larger number with the smaller one and repeat. The last non-zero remainder is the GCD. For 42 and 50: 50 ÷ 42 leaves 8; 42 ÷ 8 leaves 2; 8 ÷ 2 leaves 0 — so the GCD is 2. It works fast even for large numbers where listing factors is painful.

When is an improper fraction better than a mixed number?

Mixed numbers (1 3/4) are easier to picture — recipes, measurements, carpentry. Improper fractions (7/4) are easier to calculate with — multiplying 7/4 × 2 is one step, while 1 3/4 × 2 requires converting anyway. Use mixed numbers to communicate, improper fractions to compute.

Why do fractions still matter when decimals exist?

Decimals are convenient for display, but fractions carry exact relationships that decimals approximate. That is why your tape measure is marked in sixteenths, not decimals.

    How do I find the greatest common divisor?

    List the factors of both numbers and take the largest shared one — or use the Euclidean algorithm: repeatedly replace the larger number with the remainder of dividing the two, until the remainder is 0. For 18 and 24: 24 ÷ 18 leaves 6, 18 ÷ 6 leaves 0, so GCD = 6.

    What if my fraction is already in lowest terms?

    Then the GCD is 1 and the answer is the fraction you started with — 7/4 simplifies to 7/4. The tool still gives you the decimal and mixed-number forms.

    How do I simplify a mixed number like 2 6/8?

    Simplify only the fractional part: 6/8 = 3/4, so 2 6/8 = 2 3/4. The whole-number part stays the same.
