What does this calculator estimate?
Mean = sum ÷ count, median = middle value when sorted, mode = most frequent value. For 4, 8, 15, 16, 23, 42: mean = 18, median = 15.5, mode = none, range = 38. When every value appears once, there is no mode.
- Mean of 4, 8, 15, 16, 23, 42 = 108 ÷ 6 = 18.
- Median of an even-length list = average of the two middle values (15.5 here).
- Mode requires a repeated value; 'no mode' is a valid answer, not an error.
Mean vs median: which 'average' is honest?
Both are legitimate; they answer different questions. The mean shares the total evenly — useful for budgets and per-person costs. The median finds the middle experience — useful whenever a few extreme values would distort the picture. When someone quotes an 'average', ask which one: the choice often reveals the story they want to tell.
What does 'no mode' actually mean?
Mode only exists when values repeat. 'No mode' does not mean the question failed — it means frequency is not a useful lens for that dataset.
- 1, 2, 2, 3, 4 → mode is 2 (appears twice)
- 1, 1, 2, 2, 3 → modes are 1 and 2 (bimodal)
- 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 → no mode (nothing repeats)
How do professionals summarize data beyond these three?
Mean, median, and mode describe the center; range, quartiles, and standard deviation describe the spread. A report with only a center measure hides the distribution — two datasets can share a mean of 50 while one clusters tightly and the other swings from 0 to 100. Spread is where the surprises live.

Frequently asked questions
When should I use the median instead of the mean?
When the data has outliers or is skewed — house prices, incomes, and test scores with one very low score. The median resists outliers: adding a $10M house barely moves a street's median price but doubles its mean.
Can a list have more than one mode?
Yes — if two or more values tie for the highest frequency, all of them are modes (bimodal, multimodal). If nothing repeats, the list has no mode.
What does the range tell me?
Max minus min — the simplest measure of spread. A class with scores from 60 to 100 (range 40) performed far more unevenly than one from 78 to 88 (range 10), even if both have the same mean.
