Worked example: March 2 to March 13, 2026
Take a start date of 2026-03-02 (a Monday) and an end date of 2026-03-13 (a Friday), with 1 observed holiday entered. Both ends count, so the span is 12 calendar days. The loop walks one day at a time from the start and keeps any date whose weekday index is neither 0 (Sunday) nor 6 (Saturday).
Step 1, drop the weekends. March 7 is a Saturday and March 8 is a Sunday, so 12 minus 2 leaves 10 weekdays: Mon Mar 2 through Fri Mar 6, then Mon Mar 9 through Fri Mar 13. Two clean blocks of 5.
Step 2, subtract holidays: 10 minus 1 equals 9 business days. The output still reports the raw weekday count of 10 alongside it, so you can see that weekends cost 2 days and your holiday list cost 1 day. Values are integers, so the formatter only ever adds separators, never rounding.
Boundary cases: zero holidays, the cap, and negative entries
At 0 holidays the two figures match: the same March 2 to March 13 span returns 10 weekdays and 10 business days, a 0 percent reduction. Enter 10 holidays against 10 weekdays and the result hits its floor at 0. Enter 12 and it is still 0, because Math.max(0, weekdays - holidays) clamps below zero rather than returning a negative count.
Negative entries behave the opposite way. With -2 holidays the arithmetic is 10 minus negative 2, which returns 12 business days, a figure larger than the weekday count. That is a data entry error, not a feature, and a result above the weekday line is the tell that the holiday field needs a second look.
Other edges: a single Monday returns 1, a single Saturday returns 0, and a Saturday-to-Sunday range returns 0 weekdays with no error. An end date before the start date is rejected with "End date must be on or after start date." A full non-leap February 2026 holds 20 weekdays across its 28 days.
