What does this calculator estimate?

A timezone converter finds the same moment in another zone. Pick the zones, enter the time, and see the equivalent in each location.

  • Converts between IANA zones
  • Handles daylight saving automatically
  • UTC is the reference instant

How time zones work

Each zone has an offset from UTC that can change with daylight saving. The converter resolves the input time to a UTC instant, then renders it in the target zone — the same moment, displayed for each location.

Limitations to watch for

DST transitions are irregular (dates differ by country), and some regions have half-hour offsets. When entering a time during a DST gap, the zone resolves to the best available offset. Always confirm the target zone's season.

How to use it in practice

Use it for meetings, calls, and deadlines across time zones. A common pattern: convert your 9 AM to the client's zone. Double-check around DST change weekends in spring and fall.

Formula

Converts a wall time in one IANA time zone to another by resolving the instant (UTC) via each zone's offset, including daylight saving adjustments.

Worked example

3:00 PM EDT in New York is 7:00 PM UTC and 8:00 PM BST in London during summer.

Assumptions to verify

  • IANA zone names are used.
  • The entered time is local wall time in the source zone.
  • DST rules are applied for the date in question.

Frequently asked questions

How do I convert between time zones?

Pick the source and target zones, enter the local time, and the converter shows the same instant in both.

Does it handle daylight saving?

Yes — it applies each zone's DST rules for the specific date.

What is UTC?

Coordinated Universal Time — the reference all zones offset from. NY is UTC−4 in summer, UTC−5 in winter.

Why are some zones half-hour offsets?

Historical and political choices — India (UTC+5:30), Nepal (UTC+5:45), and others.

What happens around DST changes?

Spring forward skips an hour; fall back repeats one. Times inside those transitions resolve to the nearest valid offset.

What's the best time for a meeting across zones?

Convert everyone's 9–5 range to UTC and find the overlap — the converter does the individual legs.

Is this the same as the world clock?

Similar — the converter handles any pair of zones at a chosen time; the world clock shows current times everywhere.
