Worked example: 8,400 steps, 2.3 ft stride

Distance is just total feet walked divided by feet per mile. At 8,400 steps with a 2.3 ft stride: 8,400 x 2.3 = 19,320 ft. Divide by 5,280 ft/mile and you get 3.66 miles. The same walk at a shorter 2.0 ft stride covers 16,800 ft, or 3.18 miles, so a 0.3 ft stride difference shifts the answer by almost half a mile.

Calories use a fixed 0.000473 kcal per step per pound, a shortcut for roughly 0.04 to 0.05 kcal per step at typical body weights. A 170 lb walker: 170 x 0.000473 x 8,400 = 675.5, which rounds to 676 calories for that same walk. A 130 lb walker burns 130 x 0.000473 x 8,400 = 516.3, about 516 calories. Check the arithmetic yourself with the numbers above; the tool reproduces them exactly.

To find your own stride, walk 20 known feet and count steps. If it takes 10 steps, stride is 2.0 ft; 8 steps means 2.5 ft. Measuring beats guessing, because fitness trackers often assume a one-size default.

Where the numbers drift in practice

Stride changes with speed. A slow 2 mph stroll might measure 2.1 ft while a brisk 4 mph walk stretches to 2.6 ft for the same person, a 24 percent swing in distance for an identical step count. Going uphill shortens stride too, so a 10,000-step mountain hike can cover 1 to 2 miles less than a flat 10,000-step day.

The calorie figure ignores grade, pace, and terrain, which together can swing real burn by 20 to 40 percent either way. It also counts steps, not minutes: a day with 8,000 slow indoor steps around the house is roughly 3.7 miles but burns less per minute than a 40-minute purposeful walk.

Pedometer step counts carry their own error. Wrist trackers commonly miss 5 to 15 percent of true steps during slow or stair walking, while a hip-mounted device is more accurate but drops out when you push a shopping cart. Treat any single result as a solid midpoint, not a lab measurement.
