What does this calculator estimate?
Square footage = length × width for each area, then summed. A 15×12 ft room is 180 sq ft; with a 10% waste allowance you would buy 198 sq ft of material. Conversions: 1 square yard = 9 sq ft, 1 square meter ≈ 10.764 sq ft, 1 acre = 43,560 sq ft.
- Rectangle area = length × width; a 15×12 ft room = 180 sq ft.
- 1 sq yd = 9 sq ft; 1 sq m ≈ 10.764 sq ft; 1 acre = 43,560 sq ft.
- Material orders typically add 5–15% waste depending on cuts and pattern.
How do you measure an L-shaped or irregular room?
Divide the shape into rectangles, measure each one, and add. Example: a main area of 15×12 ft (180 sq ft) plus an alcove of 5×6 ft (30 sq ft) totals 210 sq ft. For triangular sections, use length × width ÷ 2. Sketch the floor plan first — the split you choose rarely matters as long as the rectangles do not overlap.
How do square feet convert to yards, meters, and acres?
Carpet is sometimes priced per square yard while hard flooring sells per square foot — a classic quote-comparison trap. Convert everything to one unit before comparing prices.
- Square yards: divide by 9 — 180 sq ft = 20 sq yd
- Square meters: multiply by 0.0929 — 180 sq ft ≈ 16.7 m²
- Acres: divide by 43,560 — mainly useful for lots and land
Why do listings and my own measurements disagree?
Real-estate listings usually follow ANSI Z765 gross living area: exterior wall dimensions, finished above-grade space only. Your tape measure reads interior usable space, which is smaller — wall thickness alone can account for 3–5%. Neither number is wrong; they measure different things for different purposes. For material orders, always use your own interior measurements plus waste.
How this calculator works
Formula
square footage = length (ft) × width (ft), summed across areas; with waste = area × (1 + waste%)
Worked example
A 15 ft × 12 ft room is 180 sq ft; with a 10% waste allowance you would buy 198 sq ft of material.
Sources
Sources support the method, terminology, or planning context. Editable assumptions remain your responsibility.
Assumptions to verify
- Areas are rectangles; split L-shaped rooms into rectangles and use Area 2
- Length and width are measured in feet
- Waste allowance covers cuts, pattern matching, and defects
Frequently asked questions
How do I measure an L-shaped room?
Split it into rectangles, measure each length × width, and add the areas — that is what the Area 2 inputs are for. Two rectangles cover most L-shapes; add areas together mentally for more complex layouts.
Why does my measurement differ from the real-estate listing?
Listings typically follow ANSI Z765 gross living area rules: measured from exterior walls, above-grade finished space only — garages, unfinished basements, and low-ceiling areas are excluded. Your interior measurement for flooring will always be smaller than the listing's GLA.
How many square feet are in a square yard or square meter?
One square yard = 9 square feet. One square meter ≈ 10.764 square feet. Flooring in the US is usually sold by the square foot, carpet sometimes by the square yard.
