How this calculator works

Reviewed July 2026

Formula

Room area = length × width. Purchase area = room area × (1 + waste percentage). Boxes required = purchase area ÷ box coverage, rounded up.

Worked example

A 15 ft × 12 ft room is 180 sq ft. With 10% waste, plan for 198 sq ft; at 20 sq ft per box, that is 10 boxes.

Frequently asked questions

Why round boxes up?

Flooring is normally sold only in complete boxes, so a fractional box cannot satisfy the estimate.

How much waste should I add?

Straightforward layouts often use 5–10%; complex patterns or irregular rooms may need more.

Should closets be included?

Include every surface that will receive the flooring, measured separately when necessary.
