Method & verification

How This Tool Works

Calculation Method

Computes Monthly cost from Monthly plan, Transaction rate, Fixed fee per order, Monthly sales and Orders per month.

Site methodology

No unrelated authority link is added merely to make this page look sourced. Tool-specific external sources are shown only when they directly support the method, rate, or rule.

Assumptions to Verify

  • Marketplace and payment fees are user-entered estimates.
  • Returns, taxes, advertising, and overhead may require separate allowances.

Privacy: The calculation runs in this browser. Shared links contain the page address only, not your inputs or results.

Monthly fees on $20k sales

Basic plan$640.00Shopify plan$580.00

What this means for your numbers: The plan upgrade saves $60/month at $20k of sales and breaks even on the price difference. Past ~$27k of monthly volume, the upgrade saves cash outright.

Illustrative breakdown using the worked example above. The calculator computes your own numbers with the same formula.

Worked example: the $29 plan at 2.9% plus $0.30

Say you enter the Basic Shopify defaults: a $29 monthly plan, a 2.9% card rate, a $0.30 fixed fee per transaction, $8,000 in monthly sales, and 200 orders. The percentage piece comes first: $8,000 x 0.029 = $232.00. The per-order piece is 200 x $0.30 = $60.00. Transaction fees are $232.00 + $60.00 = $292.00, and total monthly cost is $29 + $292.00 = $321.00.

That $321.00 is an effective rate of 4.01% on sales volume, well above the headline 2.9%. The fixed fee is what pushes it there: on a $40 average order, $0.30 is 0.75% on its own. Cut orders in half by doubling average order value to $80 (same $8,000 volume, 100 orders) and transaction fees drop to $232 + $30 = $262, total $291.00, an effective 3.26%. Same revenue, $30 a month saved, purely from order count. That is why the calculator asks for orders separately instead of letting you quote a single blended rate.

What the model leaves out: third-party gateways and real plans

The rate and fixed fee fields are whatever you type, but the real plan sheet is tiered and asymmetric. On Basic, online card rates run 2.9% plus $0.30, but in-person card-present payments on that same plan are 2.7% plus $0 (US figures), so a store doing half its volume at a market pays $16 less per $8,000 than the online rate implies. Shopify and Advanced drop to 2.6%/2.4% respectively, and Advanced also lowers the fixed fee to $0.20 for the highest tier.

Two costs sit entirely outside this formula. If you use a third-party gateway like Authorize.net instead of Shopify Payments, Shopify adds its own 2.0%, 1.0%, or 0.5% platform fee on top of whatever the gateway charges, so a 2.9% gateway on Basic really costs 4.9% plus the gateway's per-transaction fee. And none of these figures include chargebacks ($15 each on Shopify Payments), currency conversion (up to 1-2% on cross-border cards), or monthly app subscriptions, which routinely add $20-100 for a working store. Treat the result as the payments floor, not the full cost of running the shop.
