The beat-to-time relationship
One beat at a given tempo is 60,000 divided by the BPM in milliseconds. A quarter note at 120 BPM is 500 ms; eighth notes are half that at 250 ms, and sixteenth notes are 125 ms. Producers use these values to set delay times that lock to the groove rather than drifting against it.
Match the note value to the vibe
A dotted eighth-note delay is a common syncopated effect, while a quarter-note delay gives a spacious, percussive repeat. The ms value you need depends on the subdivision you want to hear, not just the raw tempo. This calculator converts the tempo into every standard subdivision so you can dial the feel directly.
Why timing precision matters
Tight timing keeps a mix cohesive. A delay or reverb predelay that is even a few milliseconds off can pull the groove. DAWs let you sync effects to the grid, but understanding the underlying ms value helps when a plugin needs a manual number, such as a vintage delay unit without beat-sync.
