What does this converter do?

Yard to feet converter: convert yards to feet and feet to yards instantly for fabric, landscaping, and sports field measurements. Free, runs in your browser.

  • 1 foot = 12 inch · 1 meter = 1.094 yard · 1 mile = 1.609 kilometer
  • All conversions route through the meter as the base unit, so every pair of units agrees regardless of which two you enter.
  • Standard factors are shown in the formula panel at the precision the calculator actually uses, so the arithmetic and the panel agree.
Rounding errors versus a 0.05 inch error budget
5.67 yd rounds back to 204.12 in, a 0.12 inch error

Reference factors (length)

Exact factors in terms of the meter, from NIST standards:

  • 1 millimeter = 0.001 meter
  • 1 centimeter = 0.01 meter
  • 1 inch = 0.0254 meter
  • 1 foot = 0.3048 meter
  • 1 yard = 0.9144 meter
  • 1 meter = 1 meter
  • 1 kilometer = 1000 meter
  • 1 mile = 1609.34 meter

How this calculator works

Reviewed 2026-09-20 · BoringToolsKit Editorial Team

Formula

Converts to inches first (yard x 36, foot x 12, inch x 1), then divides: feet = inches / 12 and yards = inches / 36, since 1 yd = 3 ft = 36 in.

Worked example

1 foot = 12 inch · 1 meter = 1.094 yard · 1 mile = 1.609 kilometer

Sources

Sources support the method, terminology, or planning context. Editable assumptions remain your responsibility.

Assumptions to verify

  • Inputs are treated as exact decimal values.
  • Standard (not historical or survey) unit definitions are used.
  • The calculation uses the factors at the precision shown in the formula panel; rounding beyond that is display-only and adds no accuracy.

Frequently asked questions

Why convert through meter instead of directly?

Routing every unit through a single base (meter) means each unit needs only one exact factor against the standard, and any pair combines cleanly. Direct pair factors drift apart over time in hand-maintained tables; a base-unit graph cannot.

Where do these exact factors come from?

From published standards (NIST: The International System of Units (SI), SP 330). Units like the inch are defined exactly (1 in = 2.54 cm since 1959), so conversions between standard units are exact, not approximate.

How many decimal places should I trust?

The math is exact to the precision shown. The practical limit is your input: a tape measure is only good to ~1 mm and a kitchen scale to ~1 g, so 3–4 significant figures already exceeds the measurement's own accuracy.

Worked example: converting 5 yd 2 ft to inches and back

Take an input of 5 yards 2 feet, entered as value 17 with the yard unit selected? No: enter it as two steps. First convert 5 yards: 5 x 36 = 180 inches. Then 2 feet: 2 x 12 = 24 inches. Total: 180 + 24 = 204 inches.

Now divide by 12 to get feet: 204 / 12 = 17.00 ft exactly. Divide by 36 to get yards: 204 / 36 = 5.6666..., which the page rounds to 5.67 yd. The rounding is the only lossy step; 204 inches is exact.

Sanity check the other direction: 5.67 yd x 36 = 204.12 in, so rounding cost 0.12 inches here. For fence or fabric work, read the inch figure when precision matters; for football-field style distances the yard figure is fine.

Where this converter breaks down in practice

It assumes exact yard-foot-inch relationships and decimal outputs, but real measurements are fractional. A cut of 14 ft 3.5 in converts to 171.5 inches, yet the display shows 14.29 ft, which no tape measure reads directly. For material takeoffs, convert to inches first, then apply your own fractions.

The tool converts a single value with one unit, not compound entries like 3 yd 2 ft 7 in, so you must pre-add those yourself (3 x 36 + 2 x 12 + 7 = 139 in = 11.58 ft).

Rounding grows with magnitude: a 40 yd result shows 120.00 ft, but a 1/32 in surveyor tolerance (0.03125 in) is invisible at the displayed 0.00 ft level. For anything below about 0.05 in of error budget, keep units in inches throughout and only convert at the end.
