What does this calculator estimate?

Ten wins, five losses, and one tie produce a 65.6% win percentage: ties count as half a win, so (10 + 0.5) divided by 16 games. Enter your record in the BoringToolsKit win loss percentage calculator for your team's exact figure.

  • Ties are counted as half a win in the standard convention. (Source: BoringToolsKit calculation methodology)
  • Win percentage ranks teams in standings regardless of games played. (Source: BoringToolsKit calculation methodology)
  • A 65.6% win rate over a 162-game baseball season is about 106 wins. (Source: BoringToolsKit calculation methodology)
How win percentage is calculated with ties
10-5-1 record: a 65.6% win percentage with ties as half wins.

How this calculator works

Formula

Win percentage = (wins + 0.5 x ties) / total games x 100.

Worked example

A team with 10 wins, 5 losses, and 1 tie has a 65.6% win percentage: (10 + 0.5) / 16.

Assumptions to verify

  • Ties count as half a win, the standard convention in most leagues.
  • All games played must be entered.

Worked example: 7 wins, 3 losses, 2 ties

Take a 7-3-2 record. Total games = 7 + 3 + 2 = 12. Ties count as half a win, so the tie credit is 2 x 0.5 = 1. The numerator is 7 + 1 = 8. Divide: 8 / 12 = 0.666667, and multiply by 100 to get 66.6666..., which rounds to 66.7% at one decimal place. That single step, (w + 0.5t) / total, is the whole mechanism.

The tie policy is worth seeing against the alternatives. Same 7-3-2 record: half-win (this calculator) 8/12 = 66.7%, ties discarded 7/10 = 70.0%, ties counted as losses 7/12 = 58.3%. That is an 11.7 point gap between ignoring ties and treating them as losses, over a 12-game sample. A 10-3-1 season reads 75.0% here, 76.9% if ties are ignored, 71.4% if they are losses. The half-win method always lands between the other two, which is why standings tables default to it.

Boundary cases and where the number lies

0-0-0 is rejected before any division, since total games would be 0, and any negative count is rejected the same way, so -5 wins never enters the formula. The extremes come from one game: 1-0-0 = 100.0%, 0-1-0 = 0.0%, 0-0-1 = 50.0%. The 100.0% cap requires zero losses and zero ties together; add a single tie and 12-0-1 = (12 + 0.5) / 13 = 96.2%.

Two honest caveats. First, ties hide inside the total: an 0-0-4 start shows 50.0%, identical to 1-1-0, even though one of those teams has no wins at all. Second, inputs are not required to be integers. Enter 0.5 wins and 0.5 losses and the check passes, returning 50.0% while the summary prints 1W-1L-0T, two games the user never entered. Counts are formatted with toFixed(0), so 1.5 wins is displayed as 2.
