A worked example: 620 miles at 65 mph

Take a 620-mile drive at an average 65 mph with two 25-minute stops, leaving at 7:30 AM. Pure driving time is 620 / 65 = 9.538 hours, or 9 hours 32 minutes. That alone shows the trap: 620 sounds like a 10-hour day, but the highway speed does the rounding for you.

The two stops add 50 minutes, which is 0.833 hours, so total elapsed time is 10.371 hours: 10 hours 22 minutes. Departure at 7:30 plus 10 hours 22 minutes puts arrival around 5:52 PM. If you had guessed 620 miles means 10 hours flat, your arrival would be off by nearly half an hour before traffic even enters the picture.

The minutes rounding matters at the edges too. 9.538 hours is not 9:54; it is 9:32, because 0.538 of an hour is 32.3 minutes. Mental math that rounds 0.5 hours to 50 minutes instead of 30 is one of the most common sources of late arrivals on long trips.

Where this estimate breaks down

The calculator assumes your average speed holds for the whole route, which it rarely does. A 620-mile interstate run at 65 mph average might include 150 miles of two-lane road at 50 mph. That stretch alone takes 3.0 hours instead of 2.3, adding about 40 minutes the simple division never shows. For routes mixing road types, use the posted limit of the slower segment for the whole trip and you will land closer than using the highway number.

Stop duration is another honest gap. Two planned 25-minute fuel stops are not the same as two stops that stretch to 40 because of a wait or a meal. Budget 60 to 75 minutes of unplanned slack on any drive over 8 hours; that is one missed exit, one slow gas station, one traffic slowdown. On a 9.5-hour drive that padding moves your arrival from 5:52 PM to roughly 7:00 PM, which is the number worth texting to whoever expects you.
