What does this converter do?

Length converter: miles, kilometers, meters, feet, inches, yards. Free length converter with the formula shown - runs entirely in your browser, no signup.

  • 1 foot = 12 inch · 1 meter = 1.094 yard · 1 mile = 1.609 kilometer
  • All conversions route through the meter as the base unit, so every pair of units agrees regardless of which two you enter.
  • Standard factors are shown in the formula panel at the precision the calculator actually uses, so the arithmetic and the panel agree.
How unit conversion works: every unit has one exact factor to the meter
Unit conversion routes through the meter: exact standard factors, no approximation.

Reference factors (length)

Exact factors in terms of the meter, from NIST standards:

  • 1 millimeter = 0.001 meter
  • 1 centimeter = 0.01 meter
  • 1 inch = 0.0254 meter
  • 1 foot = 0.3048 meter
  • 1 yard = 0.9144 meter
  • 1 meter = 1 meter
  • 1 kilometer = 1000 meter
  • 1 mile = 1609.34 meter

How this calculator works

Reviewed 2026-09-20 · BoringToolsKit Editorial Team

Formula

Value x (metres per source unit) / (metres per target unit), using exact factors: mile 1609.344, foot 0.3048, inch 0.0254, yard 0.9144, nautical mile 1852.

Worked example

1 foot = 12 inch · 1 meter = 1.094 yard · 1 mile = 1.609 kilometer

Sources

Sources support the method, terminology, or planning context. Editable assumptions remain your responsibility.

Assumptions to verify

  • Inputs are treated as exact decimal values.
  • Standard (not historical or survey) unit definitions are used.
  • The calculation uses the factors at the precision shown in the formula panel; rounding beyond that is display-only and adds no accuracy.

Frequently asked questions

Why convert through meter instead of directly?

Routing every unit through a single base (meter) means each unit needs only one exact factor against the standard, and any pair combines cleanly. Direct pair factors drift apart over time in hand-maintained tables; a base-unit graph cannot.

Where do these exact factors come from?

From published standards (NIST: The International System of Units (SI), SP 330). Units like the inch are defined exactly (1 in = 2.54 cm since 1959), so conversions between standard units are exact, not approximate.

How many decimal places should I trust?

The math is exact to the precision shown. The practical limit is your input: a tape measure is only good to ~1 mm and a kitchen scale to ~1 g, so 3–4 significant figures already exceeds the measurement's own accuracy.

Worked example: 5 feet to inches, step by step

The converter normalizes everything through meters. Each unit in the dropdown has a fixed meter value: foot 0.3048, inch 0.0254, mile 1609.344, kilometer 1000, yard 0.9144, nautical mile 1852. The formula is output = input x meters[from] / meters[to].

Take 5 feet to inches. Step 1: 5 x 0.3048 = 1.524 meters. Step 2: 1.524 / 0.0254 = 60 inches. The result shows 60.00 because the formatter prints two decimals for any value between 1 and 999. Because both factors are exact definitions, 5 feet to 60 inches carries no rounding error at all.

Contrast that with 2.5 miles to kilometers: 2.5 x 1609.344 = 4023.36 meters, then 4023.36 / 1000 = 4.02336 km, which the display rounds to 4.02. The full 4.02336 is dropped from view, so chain calculations done on the displayed value can drift slightly from one done on the exact figure.

Where the numbers stop matching the real world

The factors are survey-grade exact only for the definitions themselves. The foot factor 0.3048 is the 1959 international foot; US surveying data collected before 2023 often uses the US survey foot of 1200/3937 = 0.3048006096 m, which differs by about 2 parts per million. Over a 1-mile parcel boundary that is roughly 3.2 mm, negligible for a runner but enough to matter in cadastral records.

Nautical miles are exact at 1852 m, but aviation and marine charts in some contexts still reference slightly different legacy values, and statute-mile road distances are measured along routes, so converting a map's 100 nautical miles to 115.08 statute miles describes a straight-line distance, not what an odometer would read.

The tool also rejects zero and negative inputs by design, and the formatter collapses anything at or above 1000 to whole numbers with thousands separators, so 1 kilometer to millimeters shows 1,000,000 while 1 kilometer to centimeters shows 100,000.00. Trust exact factors, but treat the formatted output as a display, not a precision reference.
