What does this converter do?

Area converter: square feet, acres, hectares, and square meters. Free area converter with the formula shown - runs entirely in your browser, no signup.

  • 1 acre = 4047 sq meter · 1 hectare = 2.471 acre · 1 sq foot = 0.0929 sq meter
  • All conversions route through the square meter as the base unit, so every pair of units agrees regardless of which two you enter.
  • Standard factors are shown in the formula panel at the precision the calculator actually uses, so the arithmetic and the panel agree.
Bar chart comparing acre to square foot conversion results
2.5 acres converts to 108,901 sq ft via the square meter route.

Reference factors (area)

Exact factors in terms of the square meter, from NIST standards:

  • 1 sq inch = 0.00064516 square meter
  • 1 sq foot = 0.092903 square meter
  • 1 sq meter = 1 square meter
  • 1 acre = 4046.86 square meter
  • 1 hectare = 10000 square meter
  • 1 sq kilometer = 1e+06 square meter

How this calculator works

Reviewed 2026-09-20 · BoringToolsKit Editorial Team

Formula

Area = value x (square metres per source unit) / (square metres per target unit). Factors: 1 m2 = 0.092903 ft2, 4046.86 m2 per acre, 10000 m2 per hectare.

Worked example

1 acre = 4047 sq meter · 1 hectare = 2.471 acre · 1 sq foot = 0.0929 sq meter

Sources

Sources support the method, terminology, or planning context. Editable assumptions remain your responsibility.

Assumptions to verify

  • Inputs are treated as exact decimal values.
  • Standard (not historical or survey) unit definitions are used.
  • The calculation uses the factors at the precision shown in the formula panel; rounding beyond that is display-only and adds no accuracy.

Frequently asked questions

Why convert through square meter instead of directly?

Routing every unit through a single base (square meter) means each unit needs only one exact factor against the standard, and any pair combines cleanly. Direct pair factors drift apart over time in hand-maintained tables; a base-unit graph cannot.

Where do these exact factors come from?

From published standards (NIST: SP 811 conversion factors). Units like the inch are defined exactly (1 in = 2.54 cm since 1959), so conversions between standard units are exact, not approximate.

How many decimal places should I trust?

The math is exact to the precision shown. The practical limit is your input: a tape measure is only good to ~1 mm and a kitchen scale to ~1 g, so 3–4 significant figures already exceeds the measurement's own accuracy.

Worked example: 2.5 acres to square feet

The converter routes every conversion through square meters as the base unit. Say you enter 2.5 acres (index 2) converting to square feet (index 1). Step 1: convert the input to square meters: 2.5 x 4046.86 = 10117.15 m2. Step 2: divide by the target factor: 10117.15 / 0.092903 = 108,900.9 square feet, which displays as 108,901 sq ft.

You can check that against the direct route: 1 acre is exactly 43,560 sq ft, so 2.5 acres should be 108,900 sq ft. The 1 sq ft difference is not an error in the arithmetic, it is rounding in the factor table, covered below. Try a rounder case: 500 square meters to acres is 500 / 4046.86 = 0.12355 acres, shown as 0.1236 because values under 1 keep 4 significant figures.

Where the precision actually runs out

Two things limit how far you should trust a displayed digit. First, the factor table stores 4046.86 for the acre, but the international acre is 4046.8726 m2 (4,046.87 to two decimals). Converting through the table, 1 acre to square feet comes out as 43,560.06 instead of the exact 43,560. For anything under about 100 acres the drift is smaller than 6 sq ft, which is noise on a survey, but a land deed calculation should use the exact 43,560 figure directly.

Second, the display logic is value-dependent: numbers of 1,000 or more are rounded to whole units, numbers of 1 or more keep 2 decimals, and smaller numbers keep 4 significant figures. So 108,900.9 sq ft shows as 108,901 and 0.0001 hectares shows as 0.0001 square meters without a units warning. The stored result carries more precision than the label; if a figure is decision-critical, run the conversion once in each direction and confirm the round trip lands back on your original input.
