Worked example: the $75 sign-up fee, amortized

Take a common setup: $45/month dues, 8 visits per month, a $75 sign-up fee, and a 12-month commitment. The formula runs in two steps. First, total spend: 45 x 12 = $540 in dues, plus the $75 fee, gives $615. Second, total visits: 8 x 12 = 96. Divide: 615 / 96 = $6.41 per visit (615 / 96 = 6.40625, which the calculator rounds to the penny).

The fee matters more than most people expect. Without the $75 sign-up cost, the same gym runs $540 / 96 = $5.63 per visit. That one-time charge adds $0.78 to every visit over the year. On a month-to-month plan with no fee, the same usage costs just $5.63 per visit, which clears the under-$5 benchmark if you push attendance to 10 visits per month: $540 / 120 = $4.50.

Run the comparison the other way too. A $10 pay-per-class studio at the same 96 annual visits costs $960, so the gym wins by $345 a year. But drop gym attendance to 4 visits per month and the math flips: the gym costs $615 for 48 visits ($12.81 each), while 48 paid classes run $480. Under 4 visits per month, paying per visit beats the membership in this scenario.

Where the number lies: visits you pay for but do not take

The formula divides by visits you type in, not visits you actually attend. Industry surveys commonly report that a large share of gym members, often cited near half, visit 4 or fewer times per month after the first quarter. If you buy 8 monthly visits but average 5, the real cost of the example above is $615 / 60 = $10.25 per visit, worse than the $10 class rate. Honest inputs matter more than the fee structure.

Three edge cases distort the output. Annual maintenance fees of $50-$100 are not in the monthly figure at most gyms; a $99 fee on this membership pushes the true per-visit cost from $6.41 to $7.44. Contract minimum terms mean cancelling at month 8 still leaves you owing $540 plus the fee, so your realized visit count is lower than planned. And a forgotten membership at $10/month with zero visits is infinite cost per visit, which is why the calculator refuses a 0 in the visits field instead of showing a misleading number.

A practical rule: track actual check-ins for two months with the gym app, then feed that real count, not your intended one, into the visits field before signing a 12-month deal.
