$19 product, two channels
What this means for your numbers: Choosing the Discover-style discovery channel nearly doubles the fee on the worked example (30% vs 14.5%), costing $2.95 per $19 sale. Channel selection is the only lever.
Illustrative breakdown using the worked example above. The calculator computes your own numbers with the same formula.
Worked example: a $20 sale, line by line
Take a $20 digital download. The 10% Gumroad fee is 20 x 0.10 = $2.00. Processing is 2.9% of the price plus 30 cents: 20 x 0.029 = $0.58, plus $0.30 = $0.88. Net proceeds are 20.00 - 2.00 - 0.88 = $17.12, so you keep 85.6% of the sale price.
Now a $10 sale: the 10% fee is $1.00, processing is 10 x 0.029 = $0.29 plus $0.30 = $0.59, and net is 10.00 - 1.00 - 0.59 = $8.41. Notice the fixed 30 cents takes a bigger bite on cheap products: it eats 3% of a $10 sale but only 1.5% of a $20 sale. At $5, you net 5.00 - 0.50 - 0.45 = $4.05, and the flat fee is 6% by itself. Priced at $1, processing (2.9% plus 30 cents = $0.33) exceeds the entire platform fee, and fixed costs alone consume 43% of the sale.
The break-even rule of thumb: every extra dollar of price adds roughly $0.13 in total fees (10% plus 2.9%) and pays you about $0.87. The 30-cent floor is the only part that does not scale.
What this calculator does not model
Gumroad's pricing has changed more than once, and the tool uses one snapshot: a flat 10% fee plus 2.9% + $0.30 processing. Gumroad also advertises a $10/month paid plan that reduces the creator fee, which flips the math for anyone selling consistently. If you sell 20 copies of a $20 product per month, the free-structure net is 20 x 17.12 = $342.40; if a plan drops the platform fee from 10% to 5%, your net is 20 x (20.00 - 1.00 - 0.88) = $362.40, which beats the $10 subscription by $10. Below roughly 7 sales of that product per month, the subscription loses money.
Other gaps: VAT is collected and remitted on top of your price in many countries, so a EU buyer's effective fee base can differ from the sticker price. Refunds on Gumroad are not automatically reversed in your payout, so an accidental double refund cuts net directly. Payouts are also batched, and currency conversion for non-USD payouts adds its own spread. Treat the output as a pre-tax, single-currency, successful-sale estimate.
