What does this tool show?

Your AI visibility score is the weighted share of answers, across ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, and Copilot, that mention your brand. In a full 32 answer audit, a brand with linked mentions on 12 weight points, plain mentions on 16, and generic no brand answers on 8 earns 38 of 68 baseline points, roughly 56 percent, while the remaining 32 weight points go to competitors or to answers that name no one at all.

How the AI Visibility Checker works

The AI visibility checker turns brand monitoring into a guided audit where you are the engine. You enter your brand name, a one line description of what you do, and optionally the main competitor you lose deals to, which makes it easier to spot answers where that rival is named instead of you. The tool then generates eight prompts that mirror how buyers actually ask AI assistants for help: recommendation requests, best free options, comparisons, direct asks about your brand, how to choose questions, trusted source questions, watchdog prompts, and alternatives to the category leader.

For each prompt, the checker builds a prefilled search link for ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, and Copilot. You click through, read the answer, and record one of five outcomes: mentioned, mentioned with a link to your site, a competitor named instead, not mentioned, or a generic answer with no brands at all. Eight prompts times four engines gives 32 answers per full audit, and all scoring runs locally in your browser.

Scoring is weighted. Direct asks and recommendation prompts carry a weight of 3 because they sit closest to a purchase decision, comparison and alternatives prompts carry 2, and the open-ended watchdog prompt carries 1. Each engine therefore has 17 weight points at stake and a full audit has a baseline maximum of 68 points. A plain mention earns 1 times the weight, a linked mention earns 1.5 times, and a generic answer earns 0.5 times, while absences and competitor mentions earn nothing.

Reading your score and closing the gaps

Divide your points by 68 to get a percentage. A brand mentioned in every single answer without links lands at exactly 68 points, or 100 percent, and linked mentions can lift the raw total higher because they pay 1.5 times per weight point. Most brands land far below that on a first run. Alongside the total, the checker reports a sub score for each engine and lists your misses: every prompt and engine pair where you were absent or a competitor was named instead of you.

Use the per engine spread to prioritize. If Perplexity mentions you but Copilot does not, the problem is usually source coverage rather than brand awareness, so look at which publications and comparison pages that engine cites and work on earning a place in them. If you miss on comparison and alternatives prompts, build pages that compare your product with category leaders by name, since engines tend to reflect comparison content that already exists on the open web. Research on generative engine optimization has found that adding citations, quotations, and statistics to pages can improve visibility in AI generated answers by up to about 40 percent, which makes those edits the highest leverage starting point before you re-run the audit and compare scores month over month.

How this calculator works

Formula

Each of eight buyer style prompts is run on four AI engines (ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, and Copilot), giving 32 scored answers per audit. Every prompt carries a weight from 1 to 3, and each answer earns a multiplier: 1.5 for a mention with a link to your site, 1 for a plain mention, 0.5 for a generic answer with no brands, and 0 when you are absent or a competitor is named instead. The weights sum to 17 points per engine, so the baseline maximum is 68 points; plain mentions in every answer score exactly 100 percent, and linked mentions can push the raw total above that.

Worked example

Run all 32 prompt and engine combinations and suppose you get a linked mention on prompts worth 12 weight points (12 × 1.5 = 18), a plain mention on prompts worth 16 points (16 × 1 = 16), and generic no brand answers on prompts worth 8 points (8 × 0.5 = 4). The remaining 32 weight points return nothing for you (68 - 12 - 16 - 8 = 32), so your total is 18 + 16 + 4 = 38 out of 68, an AI visibility score of about 56 percent.

Assumptions to verify

  • You run each generated prompt yourself in each engine and record the outcomes accurately; the calculator scores your entries locally in the browser and does not query the engines on its own.
  • Prompt weights reflect purchase intent: direct asks and recommendation requests carry a weight of 3, comparison, alternatives, and similar prompts carry 2, and the open-ended watchdog prompt carries 1.
  • A linked mention is worth 1.5 times a plain mention because the link is immediately actionable and sends referral traffic, while generic answers with no brands still earn partial credit since your category at least appears in the answer.

Frequently asked questions

What does an AI visibility checker measure?

It measures how often AI engines name your brand when people ask buyer style questions about your category. This tool scores 8 prompts across ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, and Copilot, weighting each mention by intent and giving extra credit when the engine links to your site.

What is a good AI visibility score?

Under 20 percent usually means the engines answer category questions without naming you, 20 to 50 percent shows a patchy presence, and above 50 percent is strong. Plain mentions in every one of the 32 answers would score 68 points, or exactly 100 percent, and linked mentions can push the raw total even higher.

Why did my score change between runs?

AI answers are generated fresh each time and shift with phrasing, location, and model updates. Run the same prompts two or three times per engine when a result surprises you, treat a few points of movement as noise, and treat a swing of 10 points or more over a month as a real signal.
