What does this tool show?

URL slug generator: slugify any text into SEO friendly, url friendly slugs for your blog posts and landing pages. Free, private, runs in browser, no signup.

  • Lowercase, hyphen-separated, ASCII-safe slugs survive every downstream system; spaces and unicode break URLs.
  • Shorter is better for humans, unique is better for systems — the tool handles the mechanical part, uniqueness is yours.

When this tool earns its keep

Use it when you need URL-safe slugs from titles for CMS entries and file names — URL-safe slugs from titles repeatedly or once, with the result ready to copy. Pair it with its related tools below when the output feeds the next step.

Formula & evidence

How this calculator works

Reviewed 2026-09-20 · BoringToolsKit Editorial Team

Formula

Normalises the text (NFD accent stripping, punctuation mapped to the separator), lowercases it, then collapses every run of non-alphanumerics into one separator.

Site methodology

This page does not cite an external source yet. The link above documents how we build and check calculators; it is our own process, not third-party validation. Treat the inputs and results as editable estimates.

Assumptions to verify

  • Input format is assumed clean; malformed input is reported rather than guessed at.
  • Output is computed client-side and stays in your browser.

Frequently asked questions

Is anything sent to a server?

No. The transform runs in your browser; nothing you paste leaves the page.

What is the honest limitation?

It is mechanical, not judgmental: the tool guarantees format correctness, not fitness for your context — skim the output before shipping it.

How the transform works, step by step

The generator runs six passes over your title. It first normalizes Unicode and strips combining accents, so a word written with an accent and its plain spelling reduce to the same characters. A short map then folds the leftovers: ampersand becomes and, at-sign becomes at, and the sharp s becomes ss.

Worked example: the accented title Cafe Munchen and Sons 2026 Review, written with accented letters and a colon, comes out as cafe-munchen-and-sons-2026-review, a slug of 33 characters. Quotes and dots are removed, everything is lowercased, and each run of remaining symbols collapses into a single separator.

Leading and trailing separators are trimmed last, so a title that opens or closes with punctuation never puts a hyphen at either end of the path.

Length caps, fallbacks, and separator choices

The result is cut at 80 characters. That cap keeps the path short enough that the full URL usually survives intact in a search result instead of being cut off mid-word, and it leaves room for the domain in front of it.

An input with nothing usable, such as a title made only of symbol characters, reduces to an empty string and the tool falls back to the word slug, so the output is never a blank path segment.

Changing the separator rewrites every join at once: underscores suit post URLs, hyphens suit product pages, and the prefix field can put a section such as blog/ in front of the generated slug so the final line shows a full path.
