What does this converter do?
The distance between two ZIP codes is the straight-line, great-circle miles between their centroid points, not the road miles. For example, ZIP 35004 in Acmar, AL sits about 44.6 miles (71.7 km) from ZIP 35055 in Cullman, AL. The haversine formula produces that figure from each ZIP's latitude and longitude using the Earth's mean radius of 3,958.8 miles.
How the Distance Between ZIP Codes Calculator Works
Enter any two five-digit ZIP codes and the calculator looks up the latitude and longitude centroid stored for each one. It then runs the haversine formula, a standard navigation equation that finds the shortest distance between two points across the surface of a sphere. The result appears in both miles and kilometers.
The math works in three steps. First the degree coordinates are converted to radians and the half-differences in latitude and longitude are taken. Next those values are combined with the cosines of the two latitudes to produce a number called a, which ranges from 0 for identical points to 1 for points on opposite sides of the planet. Finally the central angle is multiplied by the Earth's mean radius of 3,958.8 miles to give the distance.
Straight-Line Miles vs. Driving Miles
This tool measures as-the-crow-flies distance, the same figure airlines use when they quote flight miles. Driving distance between the same two ZIP codes is usually longer, often by 20 to 40 percent, because highways bend around lakes, mountains, and city grids. If you need road miles or drive time, use a routing tool that follows the actual street network.
Straight-line ZIP distance is useful for quick planning jobs: checking whether a customer falls inside a delivery radius, drawing sales territories, estimating shipping zones, comparing how far apart two offices are, or screening a relocation commute. Keep in mind that a ZIP centroid stands in for a whole delivery area, so a large rural ZIP code can span many miles and its centroid may sit far from a specific address at the edge of the zone.
How this calculator works
Formula
The calculator looks up the latitude and longitude centroid stored for each ZIP code, then applies the haversine formula to find the great-circle distance between the two points. It models the Earth as a sphere with a mean radius of 3,958.8 miles (6,371 km) and reports the result in miles and kilometers.
Worked example
Enter 35004 (Acmar, AL, 33.5964, -86.5001) and 35055 (Cullman, AL, 34.1750, -86.8440). The latitude gap is 0.5786 degrees and the longitude gap is 0.3439 degrees, which gives a haversine value a of 0.0000317 and a central angle of 0.011261 radians, so distance = 3,958.8 x 0.011261 = 44.58 miles (71.74 km).
Assumptions to verify
- Results are great-circle, as-the-crow-flies distances between ZIP centroid points, not driving, walking, or shipping route distances.
- Each ZIP code is represented by a single centroid latitude and longitude, so results describe the ZIP area as a whole rather than any exact address.
- The Earth is treated as a perfect sphere with a mean radius of 3,958.8 miles (6,371 km), which can differ from true ellipsoidal distance by roughly 0.3 to 0.5 percent.
Frequently asked questions
Is the result a driving distance?
No. The calculator reports straight-line, as-the-crow-flies distance between the two ZIP centroids. Actual driving distance is almost always longer because roads curve around terrain and follow the highway network.
Why does my result differ slightly from another website?
Different sites use different centroid sources and Earth models. Small variations of a mile or two are normal, especially for large or rural ZIP codes where centroid placement matters more.
How accurate is the distance between two ZIP codes?
For most pairs the result is accurate within about one to three miles of the true centroid-to-centroid distance. The main source of error is that a ZIP centroid stands in for an entire delivery area, not a specific address.
