What a bond price measures
A bond is a loan you make to an issuer, paying a fixed coupon each year and returning the face value at maturity. The price is what those future payments are worth today at the current market rate: the higher the rate, the lower the price.
Limitations to watch for
The estimate assumes a flat market rate over the bond's life and ignores credit risk, call features, and transaction costs. Real bonds trade on yield spreads and can be called early. A bond bought at a discount still pays face at maturity if held — the gain is the difference.
How to use it in practice
Compare a bond's price to its face value to see if it trades at a premium or discount. Use current yield to compare income streams, and remember that price and yield move inversely: when rates rise, existing bonds fall in value.

Formula
Bond price = Σ (annual coupon ÷ (1 + market rate)^t) for each year t, plus face value ÷ (1 + market rate)^years. The annual coupon is the face value × coupon rate; current yield = annual coupon ÷ price.
Worked example
A $1,000 bond with a 5% coupon ($50/year) and 10 years to maturity priced at a 6% market rate: price ≈ $50/1.06 + … + $50/1.06^10 + $1,000/1.06^10 ≈ $926.40, a $73.60 discount from face.

What is a bond?
A bond is a debt instrument: you lend money to an issuer (government or corporation) in exchange for regular coupon payments and the return of the face value at maturity.
Why does the price change when rates change?
Bond price and market rates move inversely. When new bonds pay higher rates, existing bonds must fall in price to offer a comparable yield.
What is current yield?
Current yield = annual coupon ÷ price. It measures the income return at the price you pay, which differs from the coupon rate when the bond trades at a premium or discount.
What does trading at a premium or discount mean?
A bond above face value trades at a premium; below face, at a discount. A discount usually means market rates rose after issuance; a premium means they fell.
What is yield to maturity?
YTM is the total return if you hold the bond to maturity, including all coupons and the gain or loss from price to face value. It is the more complete yield measure than current yield.
Are bonds risk-free?
No. Government bonds carry low credit risk, but corporate bonds can default, and all bonds carry interest-rate risk: selling before maturity can mean a loss.
Does this calculator include taxes?
No. It prices the bond's cash flows before tax. After-tax return depends on your tax rate and the bond's tax treatment.
