EMOM vs AMRAP: Choosing the Right Interval Format

What each format trains, how pacing differs, and how to pick between fixed-pace rounds and max-round countdowns.

EMOM fixes the clock, not the reps

Every minute on the minute starts a new round: finish the work early and the remainder is rest. Faster output buys recovery, which self-regulates intensity — good for power and skill work under fatigue.

AMRAP fixes time and asks for volume

As many rounds as possible in a set window rewards pacing over sprinting. The measurable score (rounds) makes it a benchmark: same circuit, more rounds, week over week.

Programming them together

A common structure pairs an EMOM strength block (power, quality reps) with a short AMRAP finisher (volume, mental pace). The EMOM timer's minute beep keeps pacing honest; the AMRAP countdown keeps the window fixed.
