## How it works

A wall-clock time in a source time zone is converted to a single UTC instant using the browser's IANA time-zone database, then rendered in the local time of each target city. UTC offset and daylight saving (DST) are applied automatically per zone for the chosen date.

## Worked example

For 12:00 noon on August 15 in New York (UTC-4 in daylight time), the same instant shows as 17:00 in London (UTC+1), 21:30 in Mumbai (UTC+5:30), and 01:00 the next morning in Tokyo (UTC+9). Offsets and DST markers adjust automatically.

## Assumptions

- Time-zone rules and daylight-saving transitions come from the browser's IANA database and are applied for the exact date chosen.
- The selected time is interpreted as local wall time in the source time zone.
- Offsets shown are the actual offsets in effect on that date, not a single year-round value.
- Results are a planning aid, not a legal or authoritative time source.

## Common questions

### What is a time zone converter?

A time zone converter takes a date and time in one city and shows the same instant in the local time of other cities, applying each city's UTC offset and daylight-saving rules for the chosen date.

### How do I convert EST to IST (or any two zones)?

Pick the source city and its date/time, and the tool shows every other city's local time in the comparison table. The “vs source” column gives the minute difference, so EST-to-IST is read directly from the row for Mumbai or New Delhi.

### Does the converter handle daylight saving automatically?

Yes. Offsets and DST markers come from the browser's IANA database and apply for the exact date you choose, so summer and winter dates return the correct offsets for both hemispheres.

### What is the difference between UTC and a time zone?

UTC is the global time reference; a time zone is a region's offset from UTC plus its daylight-saving rules, which can change by season. This tool shows the actual offset in effect on the selected date.

### Why do some cities show the same time but different dates?

When zones sit far enough apart, the same instant can fall on different calendar days. For example, noon in New York is the next morning in Tokyo, so the table shows each city's local date alongside its time.
