## How it works

Profit = revenue - product cost - shipping - ad cost - payment fees (rate % + fixed) - platform allocation.

## Worked example

A $100 order with $35 product, $8 shipping, $12 ads, 2.9% + $0.30 payment fees and $2 platform allocation: $3.20 fees, $57 operating costs, $39.80 profit (39.8% margin).

## Assumptions

- Advertising cost is entered on a per-order basis.
- Subscription and app costs are allocated to one order by the user.
- Returns, taxes, discounts, support, and overhead may require additional allowances.

## Common questions

### How do I estimate platform cost per order?

Divide recurring monthly platform and app costs by the expected number of orders for that month.

### Should sales tax count as revenue?

Taxes collected for remittance are generally not operating revenue; use net order revenue appropriate to your records.

### What is contribution margin?

It is the amount left after variable order costs, before broader fixed overhead and tax.
