## How it works

Net earnings subject to self-employment tax = net business profit × 92.35%. Social Security and Medicare rates are then applied subject to the entered wages and filing-status thresholds.

## Worked example

$100,000 revenue less $20,000 expenses = $80,000 net profit; $73,880 subject to SE tax after the 7.65% adjustment, an $11,303.64 tax, about $2,825.91 set aside per quarter.

## Assumptions

- The calculation is a federal planning estimate, not a complete tax return.
- State/local tax, credits, QBI, and detailed income-tax brackets are excluded.
- The optional marginal income-tax percentage is user-entered and does not calculate progressive brackets.

## Common questions

### Why is net profit multiplied by 92.35%?

Schedule SE uses a statutory adjustment before applying the Social Security and Medicare portions of self-employment tax.

### What is the deductible half of SE tax?

A portion of self-employment tax is generally deductible when calculating adjusted gross income; it does not reduce the SE tax itself.

### Is the quarterly amount an official estimated payment?

No. It combines simplified SE-tax and optional income-tax estimates. Complete estimated payments depend on the full return and prior-year safe-harbor rules.
