## How it works

The suggested rent is the lower of the income-based cap and gross monthly income minus entered debt payments and the savings goal.

## Worked example

At $75,000 annual gross income and a 30% cap, the income-rule ceiling is $1,875 per month before considering debts, savings, utilities, and other housing costs.

## Assumptions

- Income is gross annual income before taxes.
- Utilities, deposits, insurance, parking, and moving costs are not included.
- Landlord qualification standards vary and may use different income multiples.

## Common questions

### How much rent can I afford?

This calculator suggests the lower of your income-based rent cap and the monthly cash left after debt and savings.

### What is the 30% rule for rent?

The 30% rule sets rent at 30% of gross monthly income. This calculator also checks whether debt and savings leave enough cash.

### Does debt affect affordable rent?

Yes. Monthly debt and savings are subtracted from gross monthly income. If that amount is lower than your rent cap, it becomes the suggested maximum.
