## How it works

Gross pay is annualized by pay frequency, then estimated federal withholding, state withholding, Social Security, and Medicare are deducted to estimate take-home pay.

## Worked example

For hourly pay, gross wages equal regular hours × hourly rate plus overtime hours × overtime rate. The selected pay frequency converts that period into an annual estimate for tax calculations.

## Assumptions

- Withholding is an estimate, not a filed tax return.
- Local taxes and some jurisdiction-specific rules may be excluded.
- Pretax benefits, credits, and W-4 adjustments can materially change take-home pay.

## Common questions

### Why does my paystub differ?

Payroll systems may include local taxes, benefits, retirement contributions, garnishments, bonuses, and W-4 elections not modeled here.

### Is withholding the same as tax owed?

No. Withholding is a prepayment. Final liability depends on the full tax return.

### Does gross-up guarantee an exact net amount?

It is an estimate based on the same simplified assumptions and should be verified through payroll.
