## How it works

Annual kWh = watts × bulb count × hours/day × 365 ÷ 1,000; savings = kWh reduction × rate; payback = upgrade cost ÷ annual savings.

## Assumptions

- Bulbs operate for the same number of hours at constant wattage.
- Light output and quality are assumed comparable but not verified.
- Replacement labor, lamp life, HVAC effects, rebates, and rate changes are excluded.

## Common questions

### How much can I save by switching to LED lighting?

Savings depend on wattage, usage hours, and your electricity rate. This calculator compares the energy cost of old and LED lighting over the period you enter and reports the annual savings and simple payback period for the upgrade.

### What is a simple payback period for LED bulbs?

Payback period is the time it takes for accumulated energy savings to cover the upfront cost of the LED upgrade. This calculator divides the upgrade cost by the annual energy savings to show how many years the switch pays for itself.

### Does the LED savings estimate include maintenance or replacement costs?

The estimate focuses on energy-cost savings and the entered upgrade cost. It does not model bulb replacement frequency, dimming, or other maintenance differences, which may further favor LEDs because they typically last far longer.
