## How it works

Devine: men 50 kg + 2.3 kg per inch over 5 ft; women 45.5 kg + 2.3 kg per inch. Robinson, Hamwi, and Miller adjust the base and per-inch factors.

## Worked example

A 5 ft 9 in adult (175 cm): the four clinical formulas give 69.1 to 70.7 kg (152 to 156 lb), averaging about 70.2 kg.

## Assumptions

- Formulas are designed for adults and are general reference points, not medical targets.
- Height is entered in metric (cm) or US (ft/in), and sex is used where a formula is sex-specific.
- Body composition, frame size, and muscle mass are not accounted for.
- This tool provides general estimates for planning and education only; it is not medical advice and not a substitute for a qualified healthcare professional.
- Always consult your doctor or another healthcare provider about your specific situation.

## Common questions

### What is the ideal weight for my height?

It depends on the formula. For a 175 cm male, common formulas estimate roughly 68–75 kg, and the healthy BMI range is about 57–76 kg. This calculator shows all the major formulas plus the BMI range.

### Which ideal weight formula is most accurate?

No single formula is clearly best. Hamwi, Devine, Robinson, and Miller are the most widely cited; Robinson and Miller tend to estimate lower, and Peterson lets you choose a target BMI. A clinician's assessment is more accurate than any formula alone.

### How is the healthy BMI range calculated?

Multiply a BMI of 18.5 and 24.9 by your height in meters squared. For a 1.75 m person that gives about 56.7–76.3 kg.

### Why do the formulas give different results?

They use different baseline weights, per-inch rates, and (for Lorentz) height corrections that were derived from different populations. The spread is normal and shows why a single number is misleading.

### Is ideal weight the same as a healthy weight?

Not necessarily. 'Ideal' formulas estimate a reference weight from height and sex, while a healthy weight depends on BMI, body composition, and individual factors. Use the BMI range for a broader health-oriented picture.
