## How it works

Each course's grade points are its letter grade on a standard 4.0 scale (A=4.0, A-=3.7, B+=3.3, B=3.0, ... F=0) times its credits. GPA = total grade points ÷ total credits attempted. If you enter a prior cumulative GPA and credits, they fold into an overall GPA over the combined credits.

## Worked example

Courses of Math 101 (A, 3 cr), English 102 (B, 4 cr), History 101 (C+, 2 cr), and Biology 110 (A-, 3 cr) produce 39.7 grade points across 12 credits, for a 3.31 GPA. Adding a prior 3.0 over 30 credits gives an overall 3.21 over 42 credits.

## Assumptions

- Uses the standard unweighted 4.0 scale with +/- modifiers.
- Credits are treated as attempted (an F counts toward credits attempted).
- P (pass), NP (not pass), I (incomplete), and W (withdrawal) are ignored and do not affect GPA.
- Weighted, plus/minus-inclusive, repeated-course, and pass/fail policies vary by school and can change the result.
- Term type (semester / quarter / trimester) labels your grouping; it does not change the scale unless your school weights differently.

## Common questions

### How do I calculate my GPA?

Multiply each course's letter-grade points (A=4.0, B=3.0, C=2.0, D=1.0, F=0 on the standard scale) by its credits, add them up, and divide by total credits attempted. Add course names and credits for each class, then use + Add more courses for additional classes.

### What GPA do I need to raise my average?

It depends on how many credits you've already attempted. A strong grade in a high-credit course moves a low GPA more than an A in a 1-credit elective. Enter your prior cumulative GPA and credits, then your current-term grades to see the combined overall GPA.

### Is a 3.0 GPA good?

A 3.0 (a B average) is a solid, common baseline for many programs. Whether it's competitive depends on your school and target — some majors, scholarships, and graduate programs look for 3.5 or higher.

### Do failed courses affect GPA?

Yes — an F is 0 grade points but counts as credits attempted, which lowers your GPA. Many schools allow repeating a course so the new grade replaces the F; check your institution's policy.

### How do I include my past GPA?

Set the Prior cumulative GPA and Prior credits fields (optional). The calculator folds your prior grade points and credits in with the current courses to show an overall GPA across all credits.

### How do I plan my GPA for the fall semester?

Use the term type selector set to Semester, add the courses you're taking, and enter your prior cumulative GPA and credits. The calculator shows both your current-term GPA and your overall GPA if the prior term is included, so you can see what fall grades will do to your cumulative average.
