## Answer

Construction material waste and overage: estimate flooring area, user-selected overage, and full boxes. The entered overage is not a universal waste factor.

## How it works

area = length × width; material needed = area × (1 + waste rate)

## Worked example

A 12 ft by 15 ft room is 180 sq ft. With 10% waste, plan for about 198 sq ft of flooring.

## Assumptions

- Room measurements and selected units are accurate; NIST length guidance supports the measurement units, not a project-specific quantity.
- The user-selected overage reflects the product, layout, pattern, breakage, site conditions, and installer guidance; it is not a universal waste factor.
- Manufacturer box coverage and installation instructions are verified before purchase.

## Common questions

### How much flooring waste should I add?

Many simple rooms use 5–10%, while diagonal layouts, small rooms, stairs, or patterned material can need more.

### Should I round up to full boxes?

Yes. Flooring is usually purchased by box, so round up after applying waste.
