## How it works

Required final score = (desired course grade − current grade × (1 − final weight/100)) ÷ (final weight/100). This is the exact formula the live calculator uses: need = (desired − current×(1−w/100)) ÷ (w/100).

## Worked example

With a current grade of 84%, a desired course grade of 90%, and a final worth 40%, you need (90 − 84×(1−0.40)) ÷ 0.40 = (90 − 50.4) ÷ 0.40 = 99% on the final. Because the final carries so much weight, a perfect score is required to lift a B− average to an A.

## Assumptions

- Enter current grade, desired course grade, and final weight as percentages on the same 0–100 scale.
- The final must be the only remaining scored item; if other graded work remains, the true required score differs.
- If the required score is above 100, no realistic final can reach the goal (the calculator reports the resulting course floor).

## Common questions

### What formula does this use?

Required score = (desired − current × (1 − weight/100)) ÷ (weight/100). The final's weight decides how much leverage the exam has over your course grade.

### What if the required score is over 100?

The goal is unreachable on the final alone. The calculator still shows the highest course grade a perfect final would yield, so you can see the realistic ceiling.

### What if I can score 0 on the final and still pass?

That means your current average already exceeds the target even counting a 0 on the final. The calculator reports the course floor so you know the grade is already secured.

### How much are final exams worth?

A final exam is typically worth 10–30% of a course grade, with 20% a very common default. The exact weight is set by your instructor and usually stated in the syllabus — enter that percentage (e.g. 20) as the final weight to see what score you need. This calculator shows how much leverage a high- or low-weight final has over your course grade.

### How do I calculate my final exam score percentage?

Your final exam score percentage is simply the percentage of points you earn on the exam: points earned ÷ points possible × 100. If you score 80 of 100 on the final, that's 80%. This calculator uses that percentage, weighted by the final's share of your course grade, to find what you need.

### What if my final is worth 20%?

With a 20% final weight, the final can move your grade by up to 20 points on the 100-point scale. To raise an 82 average to a 90, you'd need: required = (90 − 82 × 0.80) ÷ 0.20 = (90 − 65.6) ÷ 0.20 = 122%, which is unreachable — so even a perfect final wouldn't get you to 90. Lower weights mean the final has less leverage.

### What grade do I need on my final to get an A?

Enter your current average, the final's weight, and the A threshold (typically 90%) as your desired grade. The calculator returns the exact final score you need. For example, to reach 90% with an 82 average and a 20% final weight, you'd need 122% — impossible, meaning a lower target or extra credit is required.
