## How it works

EMI = principal x r/12 x (1 + r/12)^n / ((1 + r/12)^n - 1), n in months.

## Worked example

A $20,000 loan at 7% for 5 years: $396.02 a month, $3,761 total interest over 60 payments.

## Assumptions

- The loan uses a fixed annual interest rate converted to a monthly rate.
- Payments are monthly and made on schedule, with interest compounded monthly.
- Fees, taxes, insurance, and other charges are excluded unless financed into the amount.
- No prepayment penalties or balloon payments are modeled.

## Common questions

### What is an EMI?

An equated monthly installment is the fixed monthly payment that repays a loan in full over its term, combining interest and principal each month. This calculator estimates that payment.

### How is EMI calculated?

EMI = P × r × (1+r)^n ÷ ((1+r)^n − 1), where P is the loan amount, r is the monthly interest rate (annual rate ÷ 1200), and n is the number of monthly payments. For example, a $20,000 loan at 7% for 5 years (60 months) has a monthly rate of 0.5833% and produces an EMI of about $396.

### Does a longer loan term lower the monthly payment?

Yes — spreading a loan over more months lowers the EMI, but it increases total interest because you pay interest for longer. Shorter terms raise the payment but reduce total interest.

### What is included in an EMI?

The EMI covers principal and interest only. Processing fees, taxes, insurance, and other charges are separate unless your lender bundles them into the loan amount.

### Can I pay off my loan early?

Many loans allow early repayment, but check your agreement: some lenders charge a prepayment penalty. If allowed, extra principal payments shorten the term and reduce total interest.
